Frequently Asked Questions

 

1. Where can I find additional information/resources for member coaches?

Log-in to your idta.org email that you receive upon membership. In Google Drive, search for IDTA Member Resources. There you will find pertinent information such as Competition Season Updates, current membership, judges' perspective on strong vs weak category interpretations, and monthly newsletters sent by the Membership Coordinator.

 

2. What rule changes were made for the 2019-2020 season?

A.  All payments to IDTA should be made by check or money order.

B.  Teams are limited to one routine per category, with the exception of the IHSA category.  For the IHSA category, teams may enter up to two routines.  

C.  One current IDTA judge chosen by the present officers will now serve on the IDTA Board of Directors instead on one past IDTA officer.

 

Additional changes that will be made but did not require a vote from the membership:
 

A.  For Contest Hosts:

1. In the event of inclement weather, the decision will be made to cancel a contest by noon the day before the contest.  The contest host will receive a refund of their sanction fee and will not be held liable for any judges’ fees.  If the decision to cancel a contest is made after noon the day before the contest, the contest host will lose their sanction fee and will be responsible for all travel and lodging incurred by judges that drove to the host city, in addition to any other IDTA contracted vendor (such as Casual Tees).  In either situation, the contest host will refund 100% of all entry fees to each team that entered.

2. Contest Hosts will be charged a $150.00 fee if the internet is not working the day of the contest.

3. Contest Hosts should provide warm-up space for flag teams.  Flag teams may be allowed to use the gym floor during music check for tossing purposes ONLY, if there is not a sufficient space for them to warm-up.

4.  Trophies must beappropriate for all teams.   Please take into consideration trophy “toppers,” and that the tops of trophies should be appropriate for all teams, whether they are dance or flag teams, and that we are inclusive of both female and male team members.

 

B.  Give medals to the Top 10 Dance and Flag soloists that advance to Finals at the State Competition.

C.  The performance order in each category for State is chosen by a random draw by the Judging Coordinator.  However, if a team is randomly selected to be the first to perform in their category 2 consecutive years in a row, they will be placed back in the drawing for another position.

 

3. When are team memberships due?

Membership paperwork and payments are due for all teams by January 31. If your team intends to compete for post-season qualification at regional contests, your membership must be received and confirmed by the Wednesday immediately prior to the contest in which you receive the qualifying score or you will not be eligible to accept the qualification from that contest. 4. How can I determine if certain moves are legal or illegal?

We strongly encourage every coach and choreographer to visit the IHSA website to receive detailed explanations regarding illegal moves  (http://ihsa.org/SportsActivities/CompetitiveDance.aspx). There you will find important announcements regarding the NFHS Spirit Rules Book and the IHSA Rules Interpretation video. All specific questions regarding illegal moves should be directed to Tracie Henry at thenry@ihsa.org.

5. What happens if a coach or representative does not sign the penalty judge sheet after a performance?

Nothing actually happens! The Floor Judge will try to explain any penalties that were assessed if the coach stops to sign the penalty sheet after the performance. Most Floor Judges try to remember and will try to explain later on; however, if it is a large contest, this may be impossible! There is no penalty for not signing the penalty sheet, HOWEVER if a coach does not sign the penalty sheet then he/she would not be eligible to appeal any penalty.

 

6. What if a coach or representative fails to attend the pre-contest meeting?

At regional competitions, the coach is assessed a $15.00 penalty fee, payable to IDTA and turned in to the Floor Judge prior to the last scheduled performance of the day. Failure to pay will result in a one point penalty per routine.

7. What do I do if I want to attend a particular contest?

Contact the coach of the host school. Refer to the IDTA Contest Schedule at www.idta.org/contest-schedule for contact information.

 

8. If a coach has questions about a routine being in the proper category, what should the coach do?

Video tape your entire team performing the routine and send it to the Judging Coordinator, Cyndi Kraemer, at cyndikraemer@idta.org.

9. What do I need to know about music for competition?

All IDTA competitors must use music on a CD/mp3 player. All music is to be checked by the team coach for appropriate language; each team is held responsible for the suitability of its musical selections. Only one (1) track of music is to appear on the CD/mp3 player. A team representative must start the music. It is suggested that two (2) copies of each piece of music be brought to the music table. All music must comply with copyright laws.  Proper documentation (IDTA Music Compliance Form and music receipts) must be received by President Michelle Deets prior to attending your first IDTA competition.  If a team does not have the required paperwork submitted and approved, they will be given the option to perform the routine to verbal counts.  If a team does not have the required paperwork submitted and chooses not to perform the routine to verbal counts, the team will not be allowed to take the floor. 10. If something goes wrong while my team is performing, what do I do?

ONLY THE COACH may stop the music if there is a problem. The Floor Judge CANNOT make that decision for you - it is the coach's decision. You may stop the music if there is something wrong with your CD/mp3 player or if there is a performer who is sick or injured. You, THE COACH, may also take the floor at any time if there is a sick or injured performer. If you remove a performer from the floor, there would be an out of bounds penalty assessed. If you decide to stop the music, then the Floor Judge would decide if your team starts over again right then or if they will be rescheduled to perform later in the day.
